Resources to Promote Math Skills in the FACS Classroom

"Math Counts in the Real World: Resources to Promote Math Skills in the FACS Classroom" is a project funded through a 2004-2005 South Dakota Carl Perkins Reserve Fund Grant. A group of ten Family and Consumer Sciences teachers from nine South Dakota schools worked on the project. The involved school districts had a combined enrollment of approximately 1400 students in grades 9-12 and over 1000 students in grades 6-8 with 30-43% of their students classified as economically disadvantaged. Approximately 1050 students in these schools were enrolled in grades 6-12 family and consumer sciences classes.

The demographic targeted by the project was the achievement of students in the math subtest from the 2002-2003 SAT 10 test. The results of this test showed from 12% to 43% of the students, grades 9-12, in these schools tested at the basic or below basic level and 0-48% of students in grade 8 tested at the basic or below basic level. Math was chosen as the target for the project because of these demographics and because of increased concern locally and state-wide with the math skills demonstrated by career and technical education students in secondary education and work-place environments.

The teachers involved in the project developed learning activities and assessments to verify achievement of both technical and academic standards. The project also provided math "toolboxes" to all family and consumer sciences teachers in South Dakota to enable the teachers to use the appropriate equipment and technology in the delivery of the learning activities developed for the project.
